No Ban for Medical Pot in Rutland Town

In October, the City of Rutland banned the sale of marijuana. The ban is allowed under our state’s medical marijuana law and the Alderman put an ordinance in place that keeps any dispensary from opening here. Patients and caregivers can still grow marijuana for medical use, but no sales are allowed.

And now, Rutland Town has done the opposite – not directly, but by not enacting a ban. The Town Select Board heard testimony about it and by not acting, has opened the doors for a dispensary to come in. This mirrors inaction in other cities and towns, notably neighboring Pittsford.

There will be four dispensaries operating in the state, and just where they are located depends on whether or not any particular community bans them. Even so, with a low concentration of patients, the prediction is that no dispensary will actually be built, unless, perhaps, it services the City of Rutland by way of the Town or Rutland.

Police, who commented on the medical marijuana rules in the Rutland Herald, said it would be unlikely for someone to go through all the trouble of getting permission for medical marijuana just to abuse it. They say it’s just too easy to get illegal weed in the City of Rutland.

In a bit of irony, by banning a dispensary in the city, the illegal sales may actually go up a little as it becomes more convenient to just by marijuana from a dealer, rather than drive to wherever the closest dispensary will be.

Burlington and Waterbury are the two locations approved back in September and part of the approval process is getting permission to open from local authorities. Our state currently has the strictest rules on licensing for medical marijuana dispensaries, including the direct involvement of the Department of Public Safety.
